Chiura Obata’s Great Nature Sundown at Tioga

Chiura Obata first visited the Sierra Nevada in 1927. His experience of the Sierra’s “Great Nature” forever changed his life and his art.

In 1938, Chiura Obata was called “one of the most accomplished artists in the West” by Time Magazine. Four years later he was placed in a desert internment camp in Topaz, Utah. His works are moving depictions of Sierra Wilderness and his lifestory is one of American tragedy and triumph.

This interactive web feature reveals how the Sierra Wilderness impacted this inspiring artist’s life and art.
