Minorities, low-income families missing from parks 15 August 06

The Contra Costa Times has this interesting article on why low-income and ethnically diverse populations make up such a small percentage of visitors to parks. This is pertinent to wilderness as well.

Kamiyah Talton, a plucky, talkative 8-year-old girl, has no second thoughts about traveling to playgrounds over the hard streets of Richmond, where a high murder rate has stirred up public debate and worries. But she fears the idea of hiking in the large open space parks overlooking her town.
