Leave No Trace is an organization, a philosophy, and a set of techniques that enable us to enjoy wild places while preserving them for others who come after us.
“LNT,” as many people call it, began as a cooperative educational effort to help land managers easily teach wilderness users the basics of minimum impact camping. Today the phrase LNT is everywhere: in magazines, on trail signs, in brochures, on maps… it’s a widely accepted short-hand that reminds us how to respect the places we enjoy.
Leave No Trace strives to educate visitors about the nature of their recreational impacts and how to minimize these impacts. It is best understood as an educational and ethical program, not as a set of rules and regulations. Find out more about the national program by visiting Leave No Trace, Inc.’s website.
Here in California, federal land management agencies and our partners provide many opportunities to become involved in Leave No Trace. Use the links below to find a Leave No Trace trainer or master course near you.
