This rugged 44,896 acre wilderness was protected by the California Wilderness Act of 1984. Elevations range range from 2,000 feet at the South Fork of the Kings River to over 11,000 feet at Hogback Peak. Mountain meadows, shallow lakes, and spectacular geological formations contribute to the area’s overall beauty. The Monarch provides some of the most primitive wilderness experiences in the area.
